Take a minute to go with me to join a young man who is returning to his father. This young man has squandered his inheritance in a life of sin and indulgence. He has come to the end of himself and has decided to humble himself and seek his father’s forgiveness and acceptance. It is a long trip back. It always is. It takes guts to admit you need help. That you were wrong. Our eyes keep scanning the horizon as we near the old home place. What to expect?
Someone is running toward us. Who could it be? It’s Dad! He is running toward us with open arms! His arms circle the young man with an eager grasp and a welcoming embrace. All the time the prodigal son was gone, Dad was missing him and was just waiting and hoping that one day he would return! As we drew near to the father He was running toward us.
James 4:8 (ESV) Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
God wants us to draw near. It doesn’t really matter where you’ve been. Whether you were far away, as the prodigal was, or just up the road doing your own thing. God wants us to draw near! Amen. His heart yearns for his children to draw near. He meets our advance! He is not hiding. He is not avoiding us. He made us to need Him. He created us to be close to Him and enjoy his fellowship and the amazing joy that only that can bring to us.
