A product of God’s Grace

I recently shared a message titled “A product of God’s Grace.” The audio is available for podcast from samspulpit.com

1 Corinthians 4:7 (ESV)                  For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?

There was this young man, as the story goes, who was feeling very proud of himself. As a brand-new college graduate he had taken the C.P.A. Exams & passed with flying colors. Now he was a full-fledged Certified Public Accountant. His father had been an immigrant to the U.S., & now owned his own little business. Filled with self-importance, the young man began to criticize his father’s way of keeping books. He said, “Dad, you don’t even know how much profit you’ve made. Over here in this drawer are your accounts receivables. Over there are your receipts, & you keep all your money in the cash register. You don’t have any idea how much you’ve made.” The father answered, “Son, when I came to this country the only thing I owned was a pair of pants. Now your brother is a doctor, your sister is an art teacher, & you are a C.P.A. Your mother & I own our home. We have a car, & we own this little business. Now add that up, subtract the pants, & all the rest is profit.”

Add it up, folks. That’s exactly what we need to do, too. Add it all up. We came into this world with nothing but the eternal soul that God gave us. Everything else is profit. Everything that we have including our very existence is a gift from God. We are a product of God’s grace! It is all a bit humbling. It is the truth. We are a product of God’s grace.

Grace can be defined as God’s unmerited favor. It could also be defined as God’s sufficiency or God’s fullness in the life of the believer. Grace is costly. Dietrich Bonheoffer coined a term called “cheap Grace” He describes the view of grace that is too prevalent today. I see the grace of God exhibited in the atonement of Christ- very costly. I see God’s grace exhibited in the lives of God’s servants in the way we pass it on to others – the way we serve.

God’s grace is given to us in the way He made us. Our make-up can be illustrated with the acronym SHAPE.

S = Spiritual Gifts

H = Heart

A = Abilities

P = Personality

E = Experiences

We are products of God’s grace. Everything we are! Everything we have! How should I respond to the knowledge that everything I have or am is a gift from God?

  1. Gratitude
  2. Humility
  3. Submission
  4. Availability
